Part 1 : Carrier Bag

From a previous project, I had developed a graphic design style that I really enjoyed. For this bag, one of my main questions was, how can a graphic design style be physically represented in a project?

These are some graphics that influenced this project:

Moving forward, I wanted to use this graphic design style to communicate the use of the bag.

The Story of the Bag

This is a bouldering bag for rock climbers. It communicates two different sides of bouldering; the resting, and the climbing.

Story Zine:

Developing Textures

A grass texture was chosen to represent the resting side of the story, and the rock texture was chosen to represent the climbing side of the story.

By combing the best grass texture with the best rock texture, the final texture for the bag was created.

First Bag Concepts

A messenger style was chosen for the bag so it could be easily worn while also carrying crash pads.

Revised Bag Concepts

I moved away from the lid closure, and instead opted for a more simple and convenient zipper closure. I also added zipper pockets and a shock cord to the exterior of the bag.

Paper Form Study Models

I explored different shapes and closure methods with these paper models. These helped gain an understanding of the shape of the bag and how it will be handled.

First Fabric Prototype

The first fabric protypes helped me nail down the shape that I wanted for the bag.

Full Scale Fabric Prototype

Now that I had the shape of the bag finalized, I made a full scale prototype to test out the sizing of the bag.

Printing Graphics on the Fabric

Now that the shape and size of the bag was figured out, I printed the graphic textures onto a durable and waterproof X-Pac fabric.

Bag Story Video

This video was created using Blender to visually demonstrate the story of the bag. It showcases the differences of textures and environments between resting, and climbing.
